According to abbreviationfinder.org, the French word coq (translatable as “rooster”) led to coquette, which came to our language as coquette. This is how the individual who invests time and effort in improving his appearance is qualified.
For example: “I was always very flirtatious, I don’t like being out of line”, “Are you going to go to the hairdresser again? Don’t be flirtatious, nobody is going to pay so much attention to your hair ”, “My mother is 90 years old and she is still flirtatious”.
The flirtatious person does everything in their power to appear more attractive. That is why she takes great care in her personal grooming and tries to dress elegantly. It is common for flirts to spend a lot of money at the hairdresser and manicurist. Also that they frequently buy cosmetic products.
Suppose a man is watching television at home when he notices that he has nothing to eat. This situation leads him to make the decision to leave his home to go to a market to buy some products. Before opening the door, he shaves, combs his hair, carefully chooses a pair of pants, a shirt and a pair of shoes, and puts on perfume. Only then does he leave his house to do the shopping. It could be said, therefore, that he is a flirtatious man: otherwise he could have decided to get dressed and go directly.
When this adjective is applied to a thing, it refers to the fact that it is well cared for. A flirtatious business is one that stands out for its cleanliness and decoration. A cute garden, meanwhile, is free of weeds, dead leaves, and dirt.
The term flirtatious is not widely used today to refer to the personality characteristics exposed in the previous paragraphs, at least not by youth, since in each Spanish-speaking country and region people have been incorporating new, or well rescuing others from past decades.
The dictionary offers us the following synonyms: groomed, smug, cozy, nice and cute. Although these are not words that can be used to replace flirty in any situation, they accurately reflect some of the traits of flirty individuals; for example, the fact that they preen to look nice, and that they become snooty from the desire to receive compliments, such as “You look cute!” .
In modern life, and not so modern, an essential accessory for the flirtatious person is the mirror, without which they would not be able to verify that each square centimeter of their figure meets their standards of hygiene, order and beauty. Almost all of us spend a few minutes improving our appearance in front of the mirror, whether or not we are vain, since the so-called “good appearance” is an implicit requirement in society; however, the coquettes do not conform to this label, and that is why they spend tens of minutes getting ready.
Our language is full of curiosities, which remind us how important it is to feel the words to understand their meaning and incorporate them into our vocabulary; the fact that one of the names of the piece of furniture called dressing table is “flirtatious” is a clear example of this. It is a set consisting of a desk with several drawers and a mirror, used to prepare and perfume yourself before going out.
The name boudoir derives from the term tocado, that is, the “arrangement of the head”, which can be a hairstyle or the use of a garment to cover the head, such as a cloth, a hat or a helmet, among many other options. The coquette, therefore, is used to get ready before an event in which we want to look nice, and that is why it allows us to gather all the utensils and accessories to improve our appearance in one place.
