According to Toppharmacyschools, Springfield is a city in the state of Massachusetts in the United States. The city is located in the west of the state and has 155,000 inhabitants. The city has an agglomeration of 695,000 inhabitants (2021).
Introduction
Springfield is located on the Connecticut River, just north of the border with the state of the same name. The city is located just 35 kilometers north of Hartford, 130 kilometers west of Boston, 385 kilometers southeast of Montréal and 120 kilometers southeast of Albany, the state capital of New York. It is the first city named Springfield in the United States. Other better-known cities with that name are Springfield, Illinois and Springfield, Missouri. The metropolitan area measures 30 by 25 kilometers and is partially located in Connecticut. Like many cities in the region, the city has lost population since 1960, from 174,000 to 149,000 in 2007.
Road network
Springfield is at the intersection of Interstate 90 toll road and north-south Interstate 91. In addition, there are two 3-digit Interstates, the I-291 as the eastern bypass and the I-391 which connects the northern suburbs to the city. In addition, SR-57 forms a short highway to the western suburbs. In general, urban highways have 2×3 lanes with the exception of I-90 which has a clear through function.
History
The first highway to reach Springfield was the Massachusetts Turnpike, which opened in 1957 from the New York state border to Boston. The rest of the highways were built after the creation of the Interstate Highway system in 1956. I-91 was the first to open through Springfield between 1964 and 1970. The route passed through an industrial area along the Connecticut River. I-291 opened in 1972, connecting downtown Springfield to I-90. The I-391 was not completed until 1982. No new freeways have opened in or around Springfield since then. A ring road has never been built around the city, one of the few larger agglomerations where this is not the case.
Congestion
The highways are not very busy and have sufficient capacity. Large-scale congestion therefore does not occur in Springfield.
